"There were two taxi companies operating from the station.  John C. Wells (1831-1893) on Railroad Ave. and John Newton (1854-1922) on Smith St.  Both used stage coaches, drawn by horse, until about 1920, when auto taxis came into use."  (from A History of the Sayville Community by Charles P.
