Program Description
Event Details
Take a unique look at our local history through the glass and pottery that defined an era. This program features a collection of milk bottles from the dairy farms that dotted our landscape from about WWI through the mid-1960s, before suburban growth and rising land values led the last farms, like Broadway and Winter’s Dairy, to sell to developers. We will also showcase the evolution of Long Island Pottery from 1810 through WWI, highlighting the major works in Huntington, Brooklyn, and Greenport.
The journey continues with a look at the storied businesses and merchants of Sayville. Through a display of vintage drug store bottles, hotel artifacts, and barware, we will explore the local characters who built our town. This includes the fascinating story of the Indispensable Kit Company, a short-lived first aid firm started by a West Point engineer whose wife’s family operated the Frieman Brothers Hotel, known today as The People’s Pub. Come discover the tangible history of the items that once sat on our local shelves.
Presented by Mark Smith. Guests are warmly invited to bring their own bottles for interpretation or simply to share. Mark would love to see them.
