The Hunger Games, by Suzanne Collins

The Hunger Game story is broken up into three books. The first book is The Hunger Games and takes place in a different universe where the United States of America is broken up into thirteen districts which all have different jobs to provide for the capital. Some of these include mining and farming. Each year for the entertainment of the rich in the capital, the Hunger Games takes place. From each of the thirteen districts, one female and one male is chosen to represent their district and have to fight to be the last one alive in a rural environment. The tributes are chosen randomly even if they do not want to go. The only way to get out of being a tribute is if someone else in your district volunteers instead. The story takes place in district twelve which is a fairly poor district full of coal miners. Katniss Everdeen, the protagonist, lives here and provides for her family by illegally hunting with an old bow from her father out of district lines. Her little sister Prim is about to be entered in the drawing of the first hunger games.  Unfortunately, her name is drawn and the only thing Katniss can think of to protect her is to volunteer as a tribute. Katniss ends up in the Hunger Games, now having to fight for survival with the only tactics she knows to fight and survive for her mom and sister. The male tribute chosen was Peeta Mallark. Together they go to the Hunger Games.

The Hunger Games was such an entertaining and enjoyable book to read. It has many twists and turns throughout it with a shocking ending. I definitely recommend this book to anyone who likes action, fictional books imagined in different settings.
