We Were Liars, by E. Lockhart

We Were Liars is an amazing fictional story written by E. Lockhart. The book takes place in Massachusetts with the main protagonist who is a seventeen-year-old teenage girl. Her grandfather owns a private island where her whole extended family always spends the summers away from everything. Cadence has been going there since she was a little kid and has a very close bond with three others there. She even ends up falling in love with a friend of her cousin who recently started going there with her. Unfortunately, not everything is as it seems in the book which leads to an unpredicted and twisted ending that shocks readers. Throughout the book, you will find out things about Cadence's life and her cousins too. Although their lives may seem like a perfect fairytale of a wealthy family with a private island, there are many secrets discovered throughout the story. The story is from Cadence’s perspective and is about her trying to remember one summer when everything changed but unable to remember. She tries to figure everything out next summer but not everything is as it seems.

I really enjoyed We Were Liars and especially loved the ending. I think it is the perfect fictional story for all readers, especially teenagers. I was engaged throughout the whole story, all though at times it was a little confusing as it sometimes switched from the past to the present. Overall it was very enjoyable and the ending shocked me and I thought it was a perfect twist. The ending made you reimagine the whole story now thinking about it from a totally different perspective.
